Community Outreach and Membership Development Officer

Salary: Up to £27,000 per annum pro rata
Hours: 4 days a week
North Herts and Stevenage


Do you thrive on managing your own time? Meeting a huge variety of people? Making a real difference to the success of community groups?


This is a newly expanded role supported by extra grant funding. There is plenty of scope for you to help shape it. You would be supporting over 100 member local charities, many of them run entirely by volunteers.


Main activities:


  • Advise on issues such as governance, fundraising, legal structures for charitable organisations, volunteer recruitment and training
  • Support the set-up of new community groups
  • Refresh our membership offer to attract new community groups and retain existing ones
  • Encourage the formation of support networks
  • Promote good practice eg diversity
  • Encourage partnership between the local voluntary and statutory sectors
  • Write good news stories for the local press and our social media
  • Report on your work to the trustees, our funders and other partners


Our ideal candidate will:


  • Be able to build strong, supportive relationships with a variety of people
  • Have at least two years of broadly similar experience with community groups
  • Understand the key issues affecting voluntary community organisations
  • Have experience of developing funding applications and dealing with grant-giving bodies
  • Be able to advise on a range of income-generating activities to ensure sustainability
  • Know (or be able to find out) where to signpost for specific information or advice
  • Have excellent organisational skills
  • Be able to work occasional evenings and weekends, for example to meet with trustees also in full-time work, or to contribute to relevant CVS events
