Background
DBS checks were previously called CRB checks.
NHCVS are registered as an umbrella body with the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) which means that we can process DBS applications for you, your staff and volunteers.
It is recommended that DBS certificates are renewed every 3 years.
Do you need a DBS?
There is a common misunderstanding that anyone who works with young people or vulnerable adults requires a DBS check, this is not necessarily the case.
Organisations can check the DBS eligibility of their prospective employee or volunteer here.
As an umbrella body NHCVS must ensure that all DBS applications are lawful before submitting them, so please ensure that you have checked this eligibility before making an appointment.
Please note that NHCVS is registered to carry out Standard and Enhanced checks only.

DBS Appointments with NHCVS
If you would like us to oversee your DBS application, you will need to make an appointment with us.
All appointments are are conducted in person.
We are open 9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Identity Documents Required
The person requiring the check will need to provide original identification documents.
We cannot accept copies of documents.
We suggest you provide:
- Current passport
- Photocard Driving License
- Tax forms/ council tax bill/ utility bill/ bank statement with your current name and address on them, which is less than 3 months old and not printed from the internet
- Marriage or Birth certificate (if no passport)
- National Insurance number (on either a p45 or p60)
If you have moved within the last 5 years, previous address details, including postcodes, will be required.
If you have changed your name, you will need to provide documents and details of the name change, including the date that your name changed.

Costs
there are two elements to the cost: the DBS charge and the NHCVS admin charge
DBS Checks are not free for paid staff. There is a cost, dependent on the level of check required for the role.

Checks are FREE for volunteers and unpaid staff within voluntary organisations.
NHCVS Administration Charges
Whilst DBS checks are FREE to volunteers / unpaid staff, please note that North Herts CVS charge an administration fee for each application carried out. Our charges are as follows:

The DBS Update Service
The online Disclosure and Barring Service update service allows applicants to keep their DBS certificates up to date, and employers to check a DBS certificate.
The applicant must pay £13 per year to have their certificate renewed annually.
